Kate Sadler
Twenty years in banking and finance, a business owner myself, and the person who started The Broker Society because self employed people deserve a broker who actually gets it.
From the bank floor to The Broker Society
I started in banking at seventeen. Not in a corner office, on the floor, learning how lending actually worked from the ground up. Over the next two decades I moved through home lending, then commercial banking, then into senior leadership, and at every stage I was watching the same thing play out. Good people, running good businesses, being knocked back or underserved by a system that didn't know how to read them properly.
By the time I got to senior leadership I'd seen it from every angle, the front line, the back end, and the boardroom. In late 2020 I decided I'd seen enough of it from the inside to go and build something different. That's how The Broker Society started, a brokerage built specifically around the clients the banks so often get wrong, particularly the self employed.
I'm not just advising self employed clients from behind a desk. I run a business myself, which means every conversation I have with a client who owns a business is one I understand from both sides of the table.
My own numbers, not just theory
I bought my first home at eighteen. By twenty four I'd built up a run of investment properties, moving quickly because I could see what time and compounding might do. Then I sold it all down and started again, properly this time, with a structure built to last rather than one built for speed. Now, at thirty seven, what I hold is spread across SMSF, personal investment, and commercial property, each one there for a reason rather than because it seemed like a good idea at the time.
I don't share that story to impress anyone. Getting it wrong once is the best lending education there is, and it's exactly why I don't take a cookie cutter approach to anyone else's numbers either.
Running my own business also means I understand the balancing act a lot of my clients are living too, cash flow, a team, a young family, and everyday expenses, all while trying to build something for the long term. My goal for our family is the same as many of yours, generational wealth and a genuinely comfortable retirement, without white knuckling it through the years in between. Life still has to be lived while you build it.
Never just me
I'm proud to lead The Broker Society, but this was never meant to be a one woman show. Behind every file is a wider team of brokers and support staff, several of them business owners in their own right, which means whoever you end up speaking with actually understands where you're coming from too.
The reason it all matters
At home I'm mum to two young kids and wife to Shane, a tradie who started his own plumbing business in 2017. I watched him build that business from nothing into something real, which means I've lived the quiet months, the cash flow gaps, and the paperwork headaches that come with running your own show, not just heard about them from across a desk.
That's part of why self employed and complex lending is where I've ended up specialising. I know what it actually looks like from inside a household where the income doesn't arrive in a neat fortnightly deposit, because it's my household too.
Where I spend most of my time
Self employed and complex lending is where I've built my reputation, but the full spread of what I help with is broader than that.
