Coolum Beach started life as a scattering of cane farms and a couple of hundred hardy locals, the kind of place you'd only find on purpose. A century later it's still got that same have-a-go spirit, the surf club that started with a rescue reel on the sand in 1919 is still the heart of the town, still training up new nippers every summer, still run largely by volunteers who grew up on this beach.

Jeane Hofmeyr is our Northern Sunshine Coast broker, based just up the road in Marcus Beach, and she works with Coolum Beach locals who want exactly what the town's always offered, a proper community, a long beach, and someone who actually understands both.

"Coolum Beach was named for a mountain that means 'blunt' or 'headless.' There's nothing blunt about how quickly good property here moves."

How we help

Jeane works with first home buyer home loans for young locals and surf club families finally buying instead of renting, and with people buying their next home as they upgrade within the same beach they grew up swimming at.

Refinancing your home loan comes up constantly here, particularly for long term owners who've watched values climb steadily and never revisited their rate. Coolum Beach also draws serious interest from investment property loans clients, thanks to genuine year round rental demand from both long term tenants and holidaymakers.

With so many locals running their own trade, tourism or hospitality business, self-employed home loans are something Jeane handles constantly, alongside commercial lending for local businesses and SMSF lending for anyone investing through their super fund.

A town that still runs on its surf club

Coolum Beach is named after Mount Coolum, a Kabi Kabi word describing the mountain's blunt, cut-off summit, and for most of its history it stayed exactly that unassuming. Cane farming, banana growing and a bit of dairying kept the district ticking through the early 1900s, until a cane tramway started carrying passengers across the Maroochy River in the early 1920s and the first land subdivisions promised bathing sheds and tobogganing on the mountain. The population sat around 200 people for decades. It's grown a great deal since, but the character hasn't shifted nearly as much as the numbers.

The clearest evidence of that is the surf club. Coolum Beach SLSC started with a rescue reel dragged onto the sand for Easter 1919, run by a handful of volunteers responding to a national wave of interest in surf bathing, and the danger that came with it. It survived the Depression, lost members in two world wars, and came back after every setback stronger, still training over 200 nippers a season and patrolling the same stretch of beach their grandparents did. "The Heart of Coolum Since 1919" isn't a slogan someone dreamed up for a rebrand, it's just accurate.

That same throughline shows up in who actually buys here. Surf club families finally getting their own place instead of renting nearby. Tradies and small operators who service the tourist economy without being defined by it. Long term locals upgrading within the same postcode because leaving was never really on the table. And a growing number of people who came for a holiday, walked the beach past Point Perry, and started looking at listings before they'd even left.
